Each of our Art Glass Shades are made using many of the same techniques that Tiffany, Steuben, and Quezal used from about 1900 to the mid 1920's. The manufacturing process accounts for both their beauty and their value. This shade began life as a gathered clump of both gold (inside) and white (outside) glass. These layers were rolled in a round wood block to prepare them to be mouth blown into a mould for shaping. After shaping, the bottom was burst open to create an opening, which was then finished and placed onto a fluting mold to dimple the bottom lip.The pattern applied to this shade surface is called a “pulled feather , a name which is a result of the process itself. Thin strips of colored glass were spun onto the glass surface, and a knife dragged up and down the shade to “pull the colors into place. While the glass was hot, the shade was sprayed with tin chloride, giving it a light refracting, iridescent finish. It was then left to cool in an annealing oven. The next day, the fitter was ground off with a diamond saw and the shade was signed. See more shades with a 2 1/4" fitter.
