Capstan Station, "The Breath Below", Richmond, BC, Canada

Best of 2025
Spanning over 3,600 square feet, 'The Breath Below' is a graphic mosaic that captures the aquatic life and energy flowing within the Fraser River estuary. The artwork is made of over 3,556 custom-made glazed glass and metallic tiles, onto which a graphic is applied using a one-of-a-kind stencilling method developed for this project.

Ceramic and glass tiles were chosen because they were the only materials capable of accurately reproducing an artwork of this scale and complexity while meeting the long-term durability requirements of a high-traffic public transit environment.

Key advantages included:

  • Exceptional Graphic Detail: Allowed for complex underwater scenes to be reproduced with clarity and permanence.
  • Scale and Modularity: Practical medium for a 3,600 sq ft wall ensuring seamless alignment.
  • Public-Space Durability: Glass tile is UV resistant, chemical resistant, waterproof, and fire resistant.
  • Long-Term Preservation: Kiln-fired glazes become part of the tile surface, resisting damage and fading.

Type: Custom-made glass tile, 6 mm thick.

Manufacturer: Interstyle Ceramic & Glass

Size: 400 x 400 mm (16" x 16") tiles.

Colors (East): Solid metallic gold back + Graphic screen-printed in metallic black.

Colors (West): Metallic black background + Graphic screen-printed in metallic gold.

Concourse: Features both color combinations as the two sides converge.

The Design Process

Design and Production Process

The process involved a custom stenciling technique developed by Interstyle to translate Howie Tsui's intricate artwork onto durable surfaces. Each tile corresponds to a precise position on a mapped grid, allowing for a seamless recreation of the continuous composition.

  1. Step 1 - Mask Laser Cutting: The mask is precisely cut to match the design.
  2. Step 2 - Tile Masking: Tiles are masked and prepared.
  3. Step 3 - Mask Peeling: Sections corresponding to the design are carefully removed.
  4. Step 4 - Design Coloring and Drying: Exposed areas are colored and dried.
  5. Step 5 - Mask Removal: The remaining mask is revealed.
  6. Step 6 - Firing: The tile is fired in the kiln to complete the production process.
