Plaza Hotel Carved Carrera Marble Mantel with Gold Details

Carrera Victorian white marble with gold trim with matching white cast iron insert. This is original to the New York Plaza Hotel.

The Design Process

Unlike demolition, architectural deconstruction requires finesse instead of shear force. Reusable items such as marble mantels can lose their value if they are damaged during the salvage process. To recover this marble mantel from New York’s legendary Plaza Hotel, for example, workers had to cut fasteners in the wall, extricate the mantel, and store it safely on site until it is transported to a warehouse or retail operation.

Sustainability

Architectural salvage plays an important role in restoring, upcycling and repurposing important pieces of history that may otherwise have been destroyed.
