This Bakhtiari rug comes from the south-central part of Iran and has a checkerboard or garden of paradise pattern (Kheshti) decorated with trees-of-life, birds, flowers and animals, varying between realistic and abstract scenes, very similar to the design of the Pazyrak, the oldest rug ever found.During the period of the great Khans in the 18th century, many mansions and palaces were built throughout the Chahar Mahal valley. Sumptuous gardens and enclosed courtyards were a symbol of pride and status, and became an important theme for many weavers.
