Figured Maple Serpentine Chest

One outstanding example of HF du Pont's collection is a "tiger-striped" maple chest of drawers, made in Massachusetts between 1790 and 1810. This elegant reproduction has a serpentine front that flares out on both sides, ending in fluted pilasters. The overhanging top conforms to the serpentine shape as do the bracket feet. About the time the chest was made, serpentine fronts cost customers 50% more than a rounded front and twice as much as a straight front. This reproduction is of maple solids and figured "tiger" maple veneers and features custom reproduction solid brass hardware.
