Anaheim City SD: Lincoln Elementary

Nominee
The two story design was born to maximize space in the dense urban setting. The community became a major design element. Increased density and small site allowed a significant street presence, and a strong identity. This was resolved by the creation of identifiable and repetitive architectural entry and circulation features. The District's identity was taken into consideration by interpreting a Mission-style in a contemporary way. The Mission-style influences are seen in the monumental curved entry features, at the Administration, Gateway, Grand Stair-way, and Multi-purpose buildings; complemented with strong vertical elements and encased in terra-cotta tiles. The design exemplifies the District's progressive goals towards sustainability and state-of-the-art facilities without departing significantly from the District's preferred architectural style.According to Jose Banda, Superintendent of Schools “BCA Architects’ design is outstanding. They have created an outstanding learning environment that is safe while bringing innovation into our schools. I particularly like the sense of community their design creates such as the well-landscaped public plaza in front of the administration building which will allow for before and after school gatherings for students, staff, and parents of our District."

Sustainability

Sustainable design, sometimes referred to as green design, promotes the design, construction and operation of buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live work and learn. The Design of the new Lincoln Elementary School complies with the CHPS (California High Performance Schools) guidelines. Some of the sustainable design features of the new Lincoln Elementary School are: optimized open space; site noise control (buildings are used as buffers from the noise of the busy surface streets), water efficient landscape, ground water retention through permeable pavement throughout site, efficient HVAC system, use of an energy management system, increased natural ventilation and day lighting, reduced heat gain through exterior corridors and sun shades and use of building materials manufactured locally.
