Lucy - Embargo until 19th May

Lucy is a pioneering furniture design by Senior Furniture Designer Aaron Clarkson at Boss Design, created with the goal of eliminating upholstered furniture waste and reducinglandfill. While maintaining the brand’s signature aesthetic, curvaceous, organic forms with high comfort and refined tailoring, Lucy introduces a radical engineering approach thattransforms the product’s lifecycle.
In commercial interiors, upholstery fabric is typically the first element to wear out, often leading to entire pieces being discarded even when the structure remains intact. Although re-upholstery services exist, many clients still replace furniture due to the inconvenience of repair. Lucy addresses this issue by enabling re-upholstery directly on site, without removingthe furniture from the building.
Designed for high-traffic environments such as hospitality environments, Lucy’s cover can be removed without tools and replaced quickly, avoiding downtime, transport, anddisruption. Inspired by sailing equipment, the upholstery uses a bungee cord tension system beneath the seat, similar to a drawstring mechanism, allowing the fabric to be released, adjusted, or replaced easily while maintaining a seamless tailored finish.
Lucy is also built with sustainability in mind, using Bio-Pur foam with up to 70% lower carbon impact, a recyclable steel frame, FSC-certified plywood, and minimal fixings for easydisassembly. Each component can be separated and recycled, supporting a circular design approach.
More than just a chair, Lucy represents a shift toward furniture designed for renewal rather than replacement.

The Design Process

Lucy makes a distinctive contribution to the built environment by rethinking how upholstered furniture is maintained, renewed, and kept in use over time. In many commercial interiors, upholstery fabric is the first component to wear out. Traditionally, once the fabric reaches the end of its life, the entire piece of furniture is often replaced, even if the internal structure remains perfectly functional. This practice leads to unnecessary waste, higher costs, and increased carbon emissions. Lucy directly addresses this problem by enabling simple, on-site re-upholstery, allowing furniture to be renewed rather than discarded.

The product is most likely to be specified in high-traffic commercial environments where durability, comfort, and minimal disruption are essential. These include airport lounges, corporate workplaces, hospitality venues, hotels, and public waiting areas. Spaces such as 24/7 airport lounges particularly benefit from Lucy’s design, as removing furniture from secure or constantly occupied areas can be disruptive, time-consuming, and expensive.

Lucy’s key innovation lies in its tool-free removable upholstery system. Inspired by sailing equipment, the chair uses a concealed bungee cord tensioning mechanism beneath the seat, similar to a drawstring. This allows the cover to be released and replaced quickly while maintaining a smooth, tailored appearance. Re-upholstery can be carried out directly on site in minutes, eliminating the need for transport, reducing downtime, and significantly lowering the environmental impact compared with traditional refurbishment or replacement.

In terms of quality and durability, Lucy is engineered using high-performance and responsibly sourced materials. The internal steel frame is fully recyclable and designed for structural longevity. The chair incorporates Bio-Pur foam, which can produce up to 70% less carbon than conventional foam while still delivering long-lasting comfort and resilience. FSC-certified plywood from responsibly managed forests further supports both durability and responsible sourcing.

Lucy is also designed for ease of disassembly, using minimal bolt fixings so components can be separated and recycled at the end of the product’s lifecycle. This circular design approach ensures that materials such as foam, steel, and timber can be recovered and reused rather than sent to landfill.

By combining durable construction, sustainable materials, and a unique re-upholstery system, Lucy offers a more practical and environmentally responsible alternative to traditional upholstered furniture solutions.

Sustainability

Lucy has been designed with sustainability at the core of both its manufacturing approach and its long-term lifecycle. The product prioritises responsible material selection, reducedcarbon impact, and a circular design strategy that allows components to be reused or recycled rather than discarded.
The chair incorporates Bio-Pur foam, a material that can produce up to 70% less carbon emissions compared with traditional polyurethane foam. This significantly reduces theenvironmental impact associated with foam production while maintaining the durability and comfort required for commercial interiors. Lucy also uses a fully recyclable internal steelframe, ensuring that the structural components can re-enter the recycling stream at the end of the product’s life.
Timber elements within the chair are made from FSC-certified plywood, meaning the wood is sourced from responsibly managed forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council(FSC). In addition, Lucy has been engineered using minimal bolt fixings, allowing the chair to be easily disassembled so that materials such as steel, foam, and timber can beseparated and recycled efficiently.
One of Lucy’s most significant environmental benefits is its removable, tool-free upholstery system. The cover can be replaced on site without removing the furniture from thebuilding, eliminating transport-related emissions and preventing unnecessary disposal of otherwise functional furniture. When upholstery reaches the end of its life, the fabric coverscan be recycled into new textile fibres, extending the material’s lifecycle.
By enabling easy renewal rather than replacement, Lucy significantly reduces waste and supports a more circular approach to furniture design. Alongside FSC-certified materials, itsfocus on recyclability, reduced carbon materials, and lifecycle longevity aligns with sustainability principles commonly associated with industry standards and environmental bestpractice in commercial furniture design.

Notes

Lucy enhances commercial interiors through its elegant, sculptural design and exceptional comfort. Reflecting Boss Design’s signature style, it features soft, curvaceous lines and an organic form that creates a welcoming and visually refined presence. The chair’s beautifully tailored upholstery and seamless finish give it a premium appearance, allowing it to complement a wide range of spaces such as airport lounges, hospitality settings, and modern workplaces. Its generous proportions and carefully considered form also provide a high level of comfort, making it ideal for busy public environments where relaxation and durability are essential.

What makes Lucy particularly unique is the way its aesthetics are combined with innovative engineering. Inspired by sailing equipment, the chair uses a hidden bungee cord tensioning system beneath the seat, similar to a drawstring mechanism. This allows the upholstery to be evenly tensioned around the frame, maintaining a clean, tailored look while enabling the cover to be removed and replaced easily without tools.

This innovation ensures the furniture can be quickly refreshed on site, helping Lucy maintain its visual quality over time while reducing waste and supporting a more sustainable approach to commercial furniture design.
