Tierras is a series comprised of colored-body porcelain tile and three-dimensional, extruded natural terracotta designed by renowned Spanish architect & designer Patricia Urquiola for Mutina. The Tierras collection is inspired by the concept of sedimentation and traditional Mediterranean craftsmanship. The base of the field tile is a solid black color, comprised of recycled ceramics. Eight different varieties of chromatically compatible lava, terracotta and clay are mixed and deposited on the black base to create the color palette in this series, resulting in saturated and earthy tones. This production process combines the latest in technological innovation with original craft techniques for a refined balance of contemporary and artisanal styles. There are two varieties in the Tierras Collection: The Industrial Collection and the Artisanal Collection.“I needed a real tactile material, which did not pretend to be anything else. I was looking for a warm element, both visually and to the touch. It should remind of something familiar, terracotta and lava, and which is at the same time something different. The Tierras Industrial field tiles are suitable for interior and exterior walls and floors, including heavy-traffic commercial flooring applications. The Tierras Industrial Frame pattern tiles are suitable for interior walls and light-traffic, residential flooring applications.The Tierras Artisanal Collection is suitable for interior and exterior walls. Artisanal Base - Sand is also suitable for residential flooring applications.
