Michelangelo Statuario

The quarried version of this marble originates from a group of marbles found in the ancient Luni area in Tuscany, which is now Carrara, Italy. Named for the artistic genius himself, Michelangelo Statuario is considered to be the most prized of its group and features a translucent, pure white background with slender grey veins of varying intensity appearing in random fashion from slab to slab. In 1500, Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to sculpt a monumental tomb for him. Following his rich imagination, Michelangelo chose the marble blocks one by one, seeing in each the line of the future work already imagined. It was his conviction that his work was merely removing the excess material to reveal the existing forms to the world.Michelangelo Statuario has always fascinated artists because of its easy workability and extreme purity. It was first used by the Etruscans and then by the Romans and more recently in the Vatican Museum, St. Peter's Basilica. This superb material was also used by Michelangelo in the “Pieta di Michelangelo, the very famous statute that depicts a dying Christ in the arms of the Virgin Mary after the Crucifixion. This stone was recreated as a geologic stone producing the beauty of the pure white background in combination with incredible hardness thereby reducing the inherent softness common in its quarried counterpart realizing a stone that can now be used in horizontal installations. Whether utilized in polished or honed finish, Michelangelo Statuario's pristine beauty imparts an exclusive, refined appearance and performs beautifully in a variety of commercial and residential applications.
