softwall + softblock modular system

Gold Award
softwall + softblock is a modular, free standing, flexible partition system at the core of molo’s soft collection of paper and textile structures.Utilizing flexible honeycomb to expand, contract, and flex, each element is made in three material variations - paper with 50% recycled content, and two types of paper-like 100% polyethylene non-woven textiles.modular magnetic end panels connect softwall + softblock to one another creating long continuous partitions of any desired length. molo’s softseat fanning benches also connect magnetically to softwall + softblock, or the magnetic end panels can anchor to any other steel surface. A steel strip accessory is available from molo to create anchor points on walls, columns or cabinets. The poetic yet pragmatic characteristics of softwall + softblock offer the ability to quickly and easily shape light, acoustics, and space. The translucent white textile versions of softwall + softblock diffuse sunlight or may be illuminated from within by LED.

Sustainability

Flexible Use of Space · The fundamental idea behind the soft collection, with its honeycomb structures that expand, contract, and flex to form sculptural walls, seating, and lighting, began with the sustainable idea of maximizing urban live/work spaces and transforming spaces to suit different types of use during the course of a day and over the life of a building. Smaller, intimate spaces, created within a larger open plan, can be folded away when not in use, returning the volume back to the main room. Requiring no tracks, built in supports or infrastructure softwall + softblock modular system offers a truly flexible way to adapt a space or building to many uses.Efficient Use of Material · Efficiency is inherent in the honeycomb geometry of soft collection. A little material can go a long way as softwall expands from the thickness of a book, less than 50mm (2”), to a length just over 4.5 meters (15’) - one hundred times its compressed dimension. Because of the light weight and high stength created by the honeycomb structure, softwall + softblock can be quickly and easily reshaped, recompressed, and redeployed to transform space over and over again.Recyclable/Responsible Materials · The soft collection recognizes the strength, durability, and value of humble materials that are commonly thought of as disposable. The paper and polyethylene non-woven textiles used in the soft collection are 100% recyclable, with the paper being made with 50% recycled fibre / 50% new long fibre. The long fibres reinforce the matrix of shorter recycled fibres to make a stiff, robust paper. The soft collection also makes use of non-toxic fire retardant, adhesive, and ink.

Led by Stephanie Forsythe + Todd MacAllen, molo is a design and production studio based in Vancouver, Canada. Balancing between the realms of art, design and architecture, molo products and projects are grounded in space making and range in scale from tea set to museum. The design of molo products stems from Forsythe + MacAllen’s architectural exploration. They are inspired by the concept of smaller, tactile objects having true potency in the experience of a space. By working across a range of sizes, Forsythe + MacAllen discover how furniture can heighten the sense of human scale and experience in architecture, or how furniture and product design benefit from thinking in the larger context of place and space making. Hands-on making has always been fundamental to Forsythe + MacAllen’s design process. Ideas pass from mind to hands to material and back again, ingraining a tactile sense of materiality, construction, space and experience. This process has developed to include experimentation with factory production, in close collaborations with manufacturers. It is a way of working that leads to happy accidents and discoveries, inspiring design improvisation and original thinking.molo’s award-winning soft collection, comprised of flexible space partitions, lighting, seating and table elements exemplifies their exploration of production process and experiential space making. Recognized for poetic beauty and pragmatic innovation, softwall and softseating were acquired by the Museum of Modern Art for their permanent collection. molo and the soft concepts have also been honoured with the prestigious Danish INDEX Award, for design to improve life. Forsythe + MacAllen began working together in 1994 at Architecture school. Constructing a number of houses and small-scale objects, Forsythe + MacAllen won several international competitions for design projects and conceptual ideas, including Grand Prize in the Aomori Northern Style Housing Competition, juried by Tadao Ando and Jean Nouvel. The Aomori submission would later evolve into the waterfront Nebuta House, a museum dedicated to its namesake festival. These early projects and ideas have become molo’s foundations. Since its formation in 2003, molo has assembled a dedicated team and grown into a thriving collaborative design and production studio. Additionally, molo has an extended family of specialized manufactures, consultants and contractors that they work with in a beautiful endeavour to bring imagination to fruition.
