Whirlpool has combined the performance of a convection oven with the convenience of a microwave to create the Velos Speedcook oven. Able to grill, bake, broil and steam like a traditional oven, while operating at the speed of a microwave, the unit is spacious enough to hold a 9 in. by 14 in. casserole dish or a large pizza. Velos also softens items, such as butter, without melting, thaws without cooking edges and simmers without splattering. Using a 1,100-watt halogen bulb and a 500-watt quartz bulb in the ceiling, food is heated from the top, while microwave and convection capabilities accelerate the cooking process and lock in flavors. Velos will be available in December 2005.
