That was the idea Ric Lopez had when he designed the Terradome Terrarium, a five-pound dome fashioned to house a small landscape of plants and offset the concrete landscape of most contemporary cities. Bell-shaped glass jars were used to exhibit plants as long ago as 500 BCE, and the terrarium as we know it has been around since 1827. But Lopez forgoes Victorian solutions for a modern acrylic bell, aimed for portability and affordability. Due to its shape, the dome both conserves heat and promotes the ventilation of gases through a vent hole in its center. Placed in an acrylic base the compact modernist garden is the right environment for orchids, succulents or a mound of kitchen herbs. Instructions on how to start your Terradome are included.
