Fretwork Kettlestand

The original mahogany kettlestand was made in Williamsburg, Virginia between 1765 and 1775. 18th century Americans were fascinated with the exotic goods and the mysterious cultures of the Far East. Consequently, artists began to copy oriental designs, resulting in evocative pieces such as this stand, made to hold tea kettles. This reproduction of the kettlestand has a square top of flaming swirl-off-crotch mahogany veneer. Ornamental skirt with oriental-style fretwork. Open fretwork brackets connect the top to hand-carved splayed legs that end in architectural "guttae" peg feet.
