Corney & Barrow / Lighting design for two London bars

A new brand concept with Corney & Barrow bars (C&B), introduced first in the City, and then the original ‘Cabin’ bar at Waterloo Station where the lighting design plays an important role in providing feature and ambience in two very different ways:C&B Mason’s Avenue, Moorgate:A refurbishment and basement conversion of an existing Corney & Barrow bar. The modern exposed services’ aesthetic meant working collaboratively with all design disciplines to ensure that there was a fully coordinated lighting scheme that works technically and aesthetically. Surface mounted LED spotlights provide the general illuminance levels. With minimal daylight penetration into the spaces the lighting is focused onto the vertical surfaces, ensuring that they are well illuminated. A combination of decorative wall lights and integrated LED lighting within joinery provides an additional feature.Working closely with the interior designers an eclectic collection of retro pendants and floor standing luminaires were created, including two bespoke pieces, to form intimate, characterful spaces where customers can unwind after a hard day. The ground floor bar is the main focal point, which is located at the rear of the space, and with the illuminated bottles and wash of light to the back bar, the lighting design is key in drawing the eye into the bar.The ‘Cabin’ bar, Waterloo Station:Part of the refurbishment of Waterloo Station includes a new mezzanine bar operated by Corney & Barrow. The light-spill from the station concourse lighting presents a challenge in terms of achieving contrast and mood. Rather than competing with surrounding illuminance levels, we have focused on creating an architectural lighting scheme with contrast and colour, where the focus is less on the effect of light and more on the light fittings.Key vertical surfaces are washed in warm white light, revealing the quality of the finishes and highlighting products. Pinhole spotlights punch light down onto individual tables, while low-level decorative luminaires provide visual interest. Luminaires with solid shades and block colours were selected – in this case the luminaire is the feature, not the effect of light. The lighting really comes into its own in the evening, when soft, warm light makes this an attractive, cosy place to share a glass of wine.
