Nulty has completed the architectural lighting design scheme for SOM’s new headquarters at The Broadgate Tower, City of London.Working in collaboration with SOM’s interior design team, Nulty's lighting design concept brings depth, texture and ambience to the office space and successfully creates an authenticity true to the ethos of the practice. The lighting scheme enhances, yet softens the commanding architecture of strong angles and space and accentuates the building’s unique characteristics and architectural form.By harmonising the coolness and strength of the tower’s glass form, the Nulty team has softened the building’s muted tones and created a comfortable, stimulating and inviting workplace environment by flooding warmth throughout the space. The lighting scheme is driven by the strong, sloped elevation of the interior and the controlled permeability not only draws the eye through the space but illuminates the design of the building’s distinctive structure.In designing the scheme, Nulty has achieved a great amount of flexibility and light dexterity – it is simple and energy efficient, aiding it to achieve a BREEAM Very Good rating.In September 2014, SOM was awarded first place by the American Society of Interior Designers in the ‘Corporate project over 10,000 sq ft’ category for the fit-out of its new office.
