“Eastlake was a distinctive mix of English Gothic and Japanese designs popular in the late 1800s. Also known as Aesthetic or Anglo-Japanese, its flat, abstract, geometric style was intended to delight the eye.Named for English designer Charles Locke Eastlake, whose 1868 book Hints on Household Taste revolutionized decorating, the style had little to do with his principles. Ironically, he denounced its popularity. The Edwards' bamboo and fan motif was named the "Oriental" by Branford Lock Works. It was later sold in the 1897 Sears catalogue.
