LIGHTBLOCKS Brightens Innovative Indoor Golf Facilities
With more than 30 locations in operation or on the drawing board, Five Iron Golf is reimagining the urban golf culture in the United States. Colorful, custom-designed acrylic products from LIGHTBLOCKS are helping the business score big with golfers seeking a unique entertainment atmosphere.
Natalie Borten, Vice President of Interior Design + Art at Five Iron Golf, selected LIGHTBLOCKS’ “Dry Ice” boxes for multiple locations for the fast-growing franchise, which has facilities in Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, New York and many more. Borten chose boxes in various shapes and sizes for backbar lighting, retail area shelving and as protective cases for simulators. In each application, approximately 250-300 square feet of LIGHTBLOCKS products help bring a bright, colorful and creative appearance to the facility.
“If you’re looking at the back bar in elevation, we’re creating a linear graphic element with these components,’’ Borten said. “It depends on the size of the bar how many we use. We’re displaying the back bar for liquor shelving, but also as a decorative element.”
Borten said she searched for material that could be backlit, but also visually stunning and decorative. The acrylic LIGHTBLOCKS units and are available in more than 300 colors.
“We wanted something that could be structurally able to hold a liquor display,’’ Borten said. “But we also wanted something that could be programmed with lighting to diversify our events. We could have the backbar fixtures be one light setting, or it could be programmed to be on several different settings. If we’re having an event, we can changeup the fixtures and the lighting. I wanted something that met all those markers.”
Borten said while the space in which the LIGHTBLOCKS units are placed is small, they deliver a large impact. “It really creates a focal point at the bar,’’ she said. “It’s exciting and dynamic. The lighting component and the glowing component, and the fact that it serves as a display unit, was the design intent.”
Borten said the versatility and dynamic features of the LIGHTBLOCKS units along with customization allows them to be used in a wide range of applications.
“I could see LIGHTBLOCKS being used in various commercial spaces,’’ she said. “It can be used in custom millwork displays, or for large scale decorative purposes. They have different style fixtures, decorative fixtures that can be suspended from the ceiling, and different elements that can be used in various large-scale displays. They can be used at reception desks, transaction areas or incorporated into the countertop. There’s a lot of versatility and potential for a lot of different applications.”
Borten said the decision to incorporate LIGHTBLOCKS came down to cost, customization and material. “I love their products,’’ Borten said. “The fact that it can be completely customized, and that you have someone you know working directly on engineering the product and keeping the design intent were important. I love the versatility, so even though I was using the material again and again, I was still able to diversify it, keep it dynamic and change it up for each location.”
