Il Sogno Cinema (The Dream Cinema)

Jeffrey W. Smith
Located in a new addition of a stately brick mansion in a beautifully wooded area in exclusive Shavano Park, this magnificent theatre project was built entirely off premise and installed in one installation cycle. After one phone call from the client who had “seen us in Electronic House”, he hired our firm to design, build and install this detailed and ornate Beaux Art style cinema. From that point design details, approvals and final contract were negotiated by emails and phone calls. The communications were clear, the client was looking for a “glitzy”, movie palace feeling rich in antique real gold leaf adornments, deep classical colors and Mahogany wood tones. The design stood apart and unique from his already beautifully appointed interior of his large estate. This theatre and its builders met the challenge.A major theater mandate was to have spectacular picture and sound. That request was met with a 4K Meridian 810 Reference Video Projector with built-in scaler and 10,000 to 1 contrast ratio firing into a Screen Research 184” 2:35 curved video screen with 4-way masking. Seat-shaking audio is produced through 9.1 surround sound by McIntosh Laboratories XRT2K 3-way loudspeakers housing 40 tweeters, 64 mid-range speakers and 6 woofers delivering 2,000 watts of power per speaker. The impact of this theatre during movie action scenes is a full sensory immersive experience. The interior appointments throughout are unique. One enters the theatre level through a marble staircase. A Grand Entrance “Il Sogno” Marquee and 30’s style Box Office invites viewers into an elaborately ornamented marble and onyx Lobby/Vestibule that includes a powder room with 24k gold fixtures. Entrance to the auditorium is through a 350lb Noise-Loc™ door. There the pièce de résistance waits, housed in an engineered sound proofed construction complete with isolated walls and ceiling and “live/dynamic” floating floor system. Eleven full motion CinePalaisLounger™ seats in embossed Belgium velvet with heat/massage, custom Mahogany and gold-leafed hand-carved corbels were used. And as the client did not want to see the “backs” of the seats between rows, a “knee-wall” surround of Mahogany and gold leaf iron scrolled railing and illuminated honey onyx caps were built behind each aisle. A custom curved, illuminated onyx topped “Buddy-Bar” behind the 2nd row adds seating for 5 more guests. The video projector hush box muffles any sound and heat from the high lumen output digital projector with a SMPTE approved film port lens separating the equipment from the auditorium. The center antique French Chandelier is on a lift device and raises to clear the video picture frame as “show time” begins.Custom dyed wool pattern carpeting to match the cinema interior decor finishes out the appointments along with two sets of motorized heavy fire-rated French “Movie-House” Velvet™ theatre draperies at the auditorium stage. As conceived, this “architecture of fantasy” Beaux Arts Cinema fit the client’s needs as well in securing a single source entity to deliver a world-class finished personal cinema project for his families’ entertainment needs.
