ON TREND 2013: A Look at Home Trends from Howard Elliott Collection

Christopher Torres, Directior of Product Design & Merchandising
After my whirlwind tour of travels to Las Vegas, Europe, High Point and Asia all since the beginning of the year, I finally had a chance to collect my thoughts and wanted to share with you the latest trends and finishes that Howard Elliott is working on for development of products to be introduced during the summer and fall markets for 2013. “GO BIG or GO HOME” In keeping with our theory that BIG makes an important impact and is a category not easily found at our price points, we will continue to develop new mirrors and accessories and accent furniture pieces to capitalize on this niche. Large, Bold, Thick frames on mirrors with finishes that are made by hand and distressed by hand. Champagne silvers with grey washed overtones and soft gold tones with timeless antiquing while still reflecting shimmers are some of the finishes we will be featuring at both the Las Vegas and High Point markets. We will continue to concentrate on decorative mirrors which incorporate unique antique glass frame treatments included the deep grey and some new techniques that resemble selenite and granite. We will also be introducing some beautiful glass accessories which feature an antique mottled glass with umber, purple and yellow/gold. We will be merchandising this new collection with some new wall mirrors and accent furniture pieces that will complete the story.I have incorporated a gothic influence into some wall mirrors to resemble the ancient European cathedrals. These pieces have the forms of old church windows with steep arches and mulleins on the glass. These we did in deep antique dark finishes to emulate the timelessness of the designs and finishes. Neo classic never is deemed out of style, hence the name, “New Classic”, which means classic design with today’s form and finishes. Pediment and architectural tops on mirrors and obelisk mirrored accessories will be featured in the late fall. Metal will continue to play a big part as well in unusual hammered aged pitted design. Mixed with glass it pairs up beautifully to become unique elements. Tribal influence from all over the world meets in today’s trend where Moroccan and Indian play key roles. This strong summer palette is optimistic and experimental allowing for floral prints to be mixed with blocky stripes. Geometrics in strong graphic patterns are teamed up with rich textures and color. From the popularity of the television show Boardwalk Empire to the newest version of The Great Gatsby, it's clear that the 1920's are making a comeback. Expect a resurgence of Roaring 20's art deco in homes, influencing everything from walls to furniture. From the 70s we are taking a trip back to colors like avocado green and harvest yellow. Believe it or not these colors have resurged onto the scene once again, but of course on today’s shapes and patterns. Brady Bunch anyone?Watch for orange and corals as well as blue to teals to be in starring roles. And you have heard gold is coming back, ITS BACK strong, glaring and vibrant as well as soft and worn.I hope this information teases you a bit and helps you persuade your buyers into getting off the fence to see our new showroom and merchandising directions.
