Almost a lost trade, Appliqué is one of the oldest known art forms, dating backrnas far as 3,000 B.C. Inspired by the aesthetic of Old World Artisan Guilds,rnWende Cragg’s creations are rich in textural details and reflect an appreciationrnfor timeless interpretation of historic design.rnrnArt Nouveau, Deco and Arts & Crafts—as well as traditional—motifs are allrnincorporated into Wende’s meticulously-executed wall panels, pillows and tablernrunners in a color palette that hints of opulent jewel tones and the burnishedrnmetals of nature’s realm.rnrnThis neglected medium has unlimited possibilities. Somewhat like marquetry orrnstained-glass inlay, the composition can be manipulated to achieve shading and depthrnby “angling” the silk, turning it at 45 degrees to create subtle variations of the samerncolor. This and many other techniques are employed when crafting one-of-a-kindrnpieces that are sure to dazzle any audience.rnrnWende is a self-taught textile artist who has exhibited nationally for more than 35rnyears.
