Applique Artistry
Almost a lost trade, Appliqué is one of the oldest known art forms, dating back
as far as 3,000 B.C. Inspired by the aesthetic of Old World Artisan Guilds,
Wende Cragg’s creations are rich in textural details and reflect an appreciation
for timeless interpretation of historic design.

Art Nouveau, Deco and Arts & Crafts—as well as traditional—motifs are all
incorporated into Wende’s meticulously-executed wall panels, pillows and table
runners in a color palette that hints of opulent jewel tones and the burnished
metals of nature’s realm.

This neglected medium has unlimited possibilities. Somewhat like marquetry or
stained-glass inlay, the composition can be manipulated to achieve shading and depth
by “angling” the silk, turning it at 45 degrees to create subtle variations of the same
color. This and many other techniques are employed when crafting one-of-a-kind
pieces that are sure to dazzle any audience.

Wende is a self-taught textile artist who has exhibited nationally for more than 35
years. Featured in numerous publications and recipient of dozens of awards, her
pieces are installed in residences from Italy to Hawaii and were recently included in
the SF Decorator Showcase.

Wende works closely with designers and clients to create highly personal artistic
statements in natural fibers. Commissions gladly accepted.
